Puppies and Kittens Introduction to the Division of Positive Integers

1.

The Park has underground tunnels and when the PUPPIES are in the underground tunnels the KITTENS standing above ground will be shared equally between the PUPPIES. The number of PUPPIES in the tunnel indicates how many GROUPS will be created.

Example: There are 4 KITTENS above ground and in the underground tunnel there are 2 PUPPIES. The 2 PUPPIES will form 2 GROUPS and each PUPPY will have 2 KITTENS each.  4 / 2 =  2  GROUPS of PUPPIES with each PUPPY having 2 KITTENS in their GROUP.

Example: There are 9 KITTENS above ground and in the underground tunnel there are 3 PUPPIES. The 3 PUPPIES will form 3 GROUPS and each PUPPY will have 3 KITTENS each. 9 / 3  =  3 GROUPS of PUPPIES with each PUPPY having 3 KITTENS in their GROUP.

When we do division problems we are always trying to determine how many KITTENS are in each GROUP.
